Preparing for AP exams can feel overwhelming. You might be unsure where to start or how to manage your time wisely. Instead of just flipping through textbooks, this guide shares a proven, science-backed way to study efficiently, boost your scores, and reduce stress.
1. Start with a Self-Assessment
Don’t study blindly or spend equal time on every topic! Before jumping into your study materials, determine your strengths and areas that need improvement.
- Check the exam’s College Board page: Look at the list of topics covered.
- Make notes: Which topics do you feel confident about? Which ones need work?
- Take a practice test: This helps you confirm your self-assessment.
- Prioritize: Focus your study time on the topics where you need the most help. Don’t spend time studying things you already know!
Self-assess in early April to give yourself ample time to prepare for the exam.
2. Create a Realistic Study Plan
Create a detailed study plan for the month leading up to the exam. Research shows that spaced practice (spreading out your study sessions) improves long-term memory more than last-minute cramming.
- Mark your exam date on a calendar.
- Schedule consistent, manageable study sessions over April and May. Write in specific topics or tasks for each study session.
- Break your study time into shorter sessions: Aim to study a few times a week instead of cramming right before the exam
3. Use Effective Study Strategies
Don’t just reread your notes! Use the strategies below to better learn and remember information:
- Retrieval Practice: Test yourself by recalling information from memory. Use flashcards, quizzes, or explain concepts out loud.
- Dual Coding: Combine words with visuals — draw diagrams, concept maps, or timelines to make ideas clearer.
- Elaboration: Ask yourself “why” and “how” questions. Connect new information to what you already know and explain it in your own words.
- Concrete Examples: Find real-world examples for abstract ideas to understand them better.
4. Take Full-Length Practice Tests
Take at least 2 practice exams in the weeks leading up to the official exam. Practice tests allow you to…
- Get familiar with the test format.
- Practice managing your time.
- Review your mistakes carefully to identify patterns.
- Use these insights to adjust your study plan for better results.
