Why 1-on-1 SAT & ACT Tutoring Works

The SAT and ACT are far more predictable than most students realize. The challenge isn’t just knowing the material—it’s knowing how to apply what you know under timed conditions.

Our private tutoring is designed to help students:

  • Understand the content that actually shows up on the exam
  • Learn how to approach each type of question strategically
  • Practice everything under realistic test conditions

Over time, students stop seeing the test as a single 2½-hour marathon and start seeing it as a series of familiar question types, each with a clear plan.

Our Approach to Private SAT & ACT Tutoring

We focus on three things we know make the biggest difference:

1. Covering High-Yield Test Content

Tutoring sessions focus on the concepts and skills that appear most frequently on the SAT and ACT. We don’t just review material—we connect it directly to how it’s tested.

2. Teaching a Strategy for Every Question Type

Students learn repeatable approaches for reading passages, solving problems efficiently, and avoiding common traps. This helps maximize results based on what the student already knows.

3. Integrating Everything on Full-Length Practice Tests

Practice tests are where content and strategy come together. Students apply what they’ve learned in realistic testing conditions, then use detailed feedback to guide what we focus on next.

How the Tutoring Process Works

Step 1: SAT Diagnostic & Planning

We begin with a diagnostic SAT or ACT test or score review to understand a student’s starting point. From there, we create a personalized test prep plan based on goals, timeline, and learning style.

Step 2: Focused One-on-One Sessions

Each private SAT or ACT tutoring session builds content knowledge and teaches test taking strategies tied directly to test questions.

Step 3: Full-Length Practice Tests & Review

Students take full-length practice exams throughout the 1-on-1 tutoring program. We review missed questions in detail, explain what went wrong, and adjust strategies as needed.

Step 4: Continuous Feedback & Adjustment

As students progress, tutoring sessions evolve. We use test data and performance trends to refine strategies and ensure time is spent where it matters most.

What a Typical Test Takers 1-on-1 SAT Prep Looks Like

For most students, a full SAT or ACT prep plan includes:

  • About 10 one-on-one sessions, each 90 minutes
  • Three to five full-length practice SAT or ACT tests
  • Guided review and homework between sessions
  • Ongoing communication with families about progress

Programs can be adjusted depending on starting score, goals, and test dates.

Private SAT & ACT FAQs

How is private tutoring different from group classes?

Private tutoring is fully customized to the student’s needs, pace, and schedule, rather than following a fixed class curriculum.

How many sessions does my student need?

Many students see strong results with about 10 sessions, though this varies based on goals and starting scores.

Do students take real practice tests?

Yes. Practice tests are a core part of our process and are used to guide instruction, not just measure progress.

Can tutoring prepare students for both the SAT and ACT?

Yes. There is significant overlap in content and strategy, and many students prepare for both.

What curriculum do you use for your private tutoring?

With over 40 years of experience, we refine our curriculum regularly to stay ahead of the important changes on the SAT and ACT exams.  Our curriculum shines a spotlight on the most critical and predictable content, as well as introduces and helps students perfect the important test-taking strategies.  Our material helps break down the test into digestible and easy-to-understand concepts for our students and then puts them back together in the form of full-length diagnostics.

What can students expect in terms of score improvements?

In general, students who are engaged with the curriculum and preparation, complete all of their homework and assignments, and are eager to incorporate the critical test-taking techniques and concepts, typically average about 150 point increase from their starting scores to their official exams, sometimes even higher!

What if my student has a demanding schedule?

We understand the demands on today’s high school students and are able to customize a schedule that works for them.  Our SAT experts are available after school, evenings, and weekends (even during the school day) and work with their students and parents to ensure a schedule that is conducive to the students’ busy school and extracurricular schedules.
