Josh Feig

Test Prep and Academic Tutor

I grew up on Long Island, where I developed an early love for math, science, and problem solving. In high school I was fortunate to have teachers who encouraged curiosity and critical thinking, and I graduated as salutatorian of Half Hollow Hills High School East. During those years I realized that I enjoyed not only solving challenging problems myself, but also helping others understand the reasoning behind them. I went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where I earned both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Materials Science and Engineering, along with a minor in Mathematics. My studies required a great deal of analytical thinking, mathematical modeling, and systematic problem solving—skills that translate naturally to teaching and tutoring. After graduating, I worked as a technical analyst evaluating materials and engineering systems, which further strengthened my analytical problem-solving and communication skills. Throughout school, college, and my professional work, I often found myself helping classmates and colleagues work through difficult concepts in math and technical subjects. Those experiences showed me that many people struggle not because they lack ability, but because the material is often presented in a way that doesn’t match how they think about problems. I enjoy finding new ways to explain concepts, breaking complex ideas into clear steps, and helping students see the logic behind a solution. As a tutor, my goal is to help students develop confidence and independence in their problem-solving abilities. For standardized tests like the SAT, this means focusing not only on content knowledge but also on strategies that allow students to approach questions efficiently and thoughtfully. I emphasize understanding patterns, recognizing common problem types, and building a toolkit of strategies that students can apply across a wide range of questions. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy playing the piano and often learning music by ear. When I am not working or creating, I spend time with my standard poodle Archie, going on walks and exploring nature.
