Nick Mervosh

Test Prep and Academic Tutor

When I was a kid, I found reading at first to be incredibly frustrating. Upon entering the fourth grade, however, my teacher really made stories come to life. She would read characters in different voices, crafting stories where I could visualize characters and plots, as I often wondered and marveled at what would happen next. She would often provide us with the opportunity to write our own short stories and read them in front of the class. From this point forward, I developed a love for school, and especially loved reading and having the opportunity to understand others’ perspectives and stories. As a result of my academic record, I received an academic scholarship and was able to attend The George Washington University for one fourth of the cost. I decided to study psychology and biology, enjoying the balance of psychology which I found interesting analytically with the mechanistic nature of biology which I also found fascinating. Abnormal psychology as well as enzyme mechanisms and immunology stood out as content in college that were particularly enjoyable. Upon graduating, I was afforded the opportunity to work in research with several amazing teams. Among these opportunities were neuroscience research at The Friedman Brain Institute at Mount Sinai and clinical research in robotic assisted surgery for oncology patients at Northwell Health. My most recent research involvement was in neurological research with Dr. Gayatri Devi, MD, MS, FAAN, who is an internationally recognized expert in Alzheimer’s Disease and who has been featured numerous times on Good Morning America. My research involvements culminated in publications in Nature Communications, Brain Behavior, and Immunity, and Neuropsychopharmacology, among other journals. Aspiring to go back to school to ultimately help others with a keen interest in further developing clinical skills, I decided to pursue a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from LIU, where I am currently a doctoral student. I was elated to join Test Takers as an Academic and Test Prep Tutor to also further my interests in education and understanding students’ perspectives, with interests in helping students approach testing anxiety and confront tests that seem scary. I enjoy helping students build confidence so that ultimately on test day they are proud of the hard work that they have put in which comes from within. Aside from ultimately becoming a psychologist and helping others, I hope to some day teach at various college levels as well.
